Media Matters for America—a progressive nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media — seeks a Digital Design Associate/Graphic Designer. This is a full-time position based in our Washington, D.C., office. Applicants must be prepared to relocate if they do not live within commuting distance of downtown D.C.


Role summary:
The Digital Design Associate/Graphic Designer creates images for posts and graphics for social media and supports other design projects. The Digital Design Associate/Graphic Designer assists in creating and maintaining a fresh and consistent visual brand for the organization.


Reporting structure:

  • The Digital Design Associate/Graphic Designer reports to the News Director. This is not a managerial position.


Primary responsibilities:

  •  Graphics/illustration: Create effective visual content for Media Matters’ website, as well as social media and other platforms. The Digital Design Associate/Graphic Designer is a member of the graphics team that’s responsible for creating all original images on the Media Matters site, including for all Media Matters written posts. 
  • Charts & Data Visualization: Design and develop all charts for Media Matters content, including large-scale data analysis projects, in order to present data in a digestible and easy to understand format for the website and social media.

 Secondary responsibilities:

  • Outreach, PDFs, and email: Assist with graphics needs for outreach and advocacy projects or campaign emails, when requested.
  • Advertisements and advocacy material: Collaborate with campaign, communications,  and social media teams to create original ads for Facebook, print media, and advocacy-related actions/events.
  • Social media collateral: Create or collaborate on original video and graphics content for social platforms and translate Media Matters written content into formats tailored for social audiences and platforms — including but not limited to: social video content; charts; illustrations; infographics; and animated GIFs. 

Required qualifications: 

  • 1+ years professional experience in a fast-paced creative job

  • Graphic design knowledge and experience, including:

    Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, e.g. Photoshop & Illustrator
    Ability to create compelling visual images, infographics, illustrations, charts, etc.
    Experience creating content for online and print spaces
    Capacity to develop and implement a design strategy and understand the ways in which specific tactics support the organization’s goals and visual brand 

  • Strong editorial skills, including the ability to:
    Translate complex ideas and abstract concepts into digestible and effective social media posts to tell compelling and powerful stories
    Create content that reaches a variety of audiences, including those on mobile-facing social networks, and outside of Washington, D.C.
    Understand and apply evolving design best practices, balancing innovation with what has proven successful for Media Matters and similar organizations in the past

  • Alignment with Media Matters’ work culture, including:
    Ability to operate effectively both independently and in a team setting
    Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines on a daily basis, organize long-lead projects, and quickly adapt to new challenges in a fast-paced news cycle
    Receptivity and responsiveness to both concrete and abstract feedback
    Dedication to accuracy, with the ability to prioritize and give keen attention to detail 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Understanding of U.S. media and the ways conservative misinformation affects public debate
  • Familiarity with the U.S. political landscape and progressive causes
  • Experience with social media content creation and/or video editing
  • Knowledge or proficiency with HTML/CSS and other web design elements
