Deadline to apply: June 14th, 2019

The Community team is looking for a Designer to join us at Big Cartel to work on all sorts of weird, fun, and meaningful community and marketing projects. We very rarely have openings for positions like this, so we’re excited to add someone new to our team.

On the Community team, we wear a bunch of different hats and work on creative ways of inspiring, engaging, and supporting our community. As one of two designers, you’ll use your skills to bring a unique, vibrant look and feel to our projects. From social media to emails to bigcartel-dot-com, our blog and beyond, you’ll help define the look and feel of Big Cartel.

We believe that our best work comes from collaboration. In addition to your work on Community projects, you’ll also have the opportunity to shape decisions surrounding Big Cartel’s features and initiatives. We’re proud of our holistic approach, and rely on feedback and ideas from teammates across the company to ensure that we’re building the best platform we can for artists.

If we’re new to you, Big Cartel is an e-commerce platform that’s home to more than a million stores filled with all kinds of weird and wonderful products from around the world. We’re 100% independent and focused on helping our customers make a living doing what they love. In 2018, we were recognized by Forbes as a Small Giant™, their award for America’s best small companies. We’re a tight-knit team of 30 or so who have a deep involvement in art, music and DIY projects. We exist to help make it easier for creative people to make a living from their work.

Our ideal person would have…

  • Empathy for our customers and their interests
  • 3-5 years of design experience or similar
  • Really strong and versatile illustration skills
  • A deep understanding of visual design principles and process (typography, iconography, composition, color, layout, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and project management skills
  • Mastery of Sketch (or similar) and Adobe software (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, etc.)
  • Experience designing for social media
  • An ability to facilitate discussions and design thinking/review sessions across the company
  • Great time management to juggle multiple projects and deliver excellent work on time.

Bonus Points for

  • Animation or video production skills
  • Experience selling products and running a shop online
  • Photography and editing chops
  • Being a great writer or interviewer
  • Remote work experience

While we want your sharp skills, we’re specifically looking for a great teammate who values creativity, respect, and an honest desire to support artists. Our mission is to help designers, musicians, makers, and other artists, and your work will be a critical part of helping make Big Cartel an inspiring and supportive place to call home.

Job Perks
