Quartz seeks an iOS developer to help build the next era of mobile news apps.
We are a small team with lots of room to experiment, shape our existing products, and create new ones. That’s how we developed our first major iOS app, which rethought how people could get their news on phones. It was selected by Apple as an editors’ pick, and widely praised elsewhere.
This position would work on that app and help develop new experiences on iOS. You would work alongside our other iOS developer and be a part of the broader Quartz engineering team, which is based in New York. Our strong preference is that you are in New York, too, but we’ll consider applications from elsewhere.
Ideal candidates for this role are interested in creating new kinds of mobile experiences and pushing the boundaries of what a news app can be. Look at our existing apps, Quartz and Flags, for examples of what we mean.
We write our apps in Swift, so you should, too. (If you’re fluent in Objective-C and happy to pick up Swift, that’s also cool.) You should have at least one example of your work in the App Store. To apply, please send us a link to the app along with a description of what you contributed to it. We would also welcome ideas for our existing apps or new ones we could develop.
Quartz (qz.com) is a business news organization that launched in 2012 as part of Atlantic Media Company with a mission to be a guide to the new global economy. In four years, we’ve grown to nearly 200 people around the world.
Across Atlantic Media, generally, the firm looks for two “pillar gifts” in its candidates. In all of us, these are more aspirational than actual, but they are central in our intentions.
1. Force of Intellect - Atlantic Media seeks a discipline and rigor of thought as manifested, often, in exceptional academic performance and, later, success in a professional environment.
2. Spirit of Generosity - Equally, Atlantic Media seeks what we term a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition towards service and selfless conduct.
Atlantic Media is an equal opportunity employer of minorities, women, veterans and those with disabilities.
