Account Director

The Account Director is part project translator, part creative liaison, and all-around relationship whisperer for W21. They’re the voice of the agency for our clients and they deftly, effortlessly, and spectacularly help manage the communication between our clients and the creative and production teams who strategize, create, and execute the incredible work that goes out our doors and into the world every day.

The Account Director manages and sets the direction for the account management team, as well as defines and ensures performance goals are met by their staff. The Director position is responsible for account services across all of our clients and is expected to have a command of all projects and all clients at a supervisory level. The roll coordinates planning and execution seamlessly with division directors and their teams in strategy, creative, production, project management, and operations. The Account Director directs the work of the account management team and ensures that the quality of the produced work meets the expectations of W21 and our clients.

The Account Director also rolls up their sleeves and works one-on-one with clients as an account manager for specific projects. They will service client accounts, represent client needs, oversee client work within the agency, and provide exceptional customer service by establishing new client relationships and retaining current accounts.

Essential Duties

Division/Process Management (60%)

The overall essential function of the Account Director includes bringing consistency to the account management team through identifying, training, implementing, and ensuring best practices are followed.

  • Stay apprised of all client details from an account management perspective and provide feedback and best-practice advice to account management team members
  • Actively participate in all client reporting during weekly traffic meetings
  • In cooperation with the Chief Services Officer and Chief Operations Officer, identify possible process improvements and facilitate the implementation of solutions in these areas through the account management team
  • In cooperation with the CSO and COO, develop standardized client-facing documents
  • Develop an account handbook to be used for new team members which would include general best practices, account responsibilities, client roster per account manager, and any other relevant information necessary to provide industry-leading client service
  • Maintain revenue forecast document and balance client assignments across the account management team
  • Define, train, and ensure the account management team performs the duties of account managers versus project managers
  • Ensure that agency processes are adhered to by the account team
  • In cooperation with the CSO, allocate resources for the account management team
  • In cooperation with the COO, work with the account management team to manage client profitability
  • In cooperation with the CSO and COO, review like projects for consistency across account managers and recommend best practices in project architecture
  • Collaborate with other directors to establish consistent responsibility with other departments

Account Management (30%)

The Account Director will also function as an Account Manager. The overall essential function of this segment of the role includes day-to-day interface with clients and internal teams to discuss and identify marketing requirements, proactive management of client expectations and satisfaction, and the building and strengthening of client relationships.

  • Oversee internal client strategic and creative work
  • Oversee client budget management
  • Coordinate with all necessary agency team members specializing in strategy, media, creative, and research
  • Assist with the formulation of marketing strategies
  • Liaison with, and act as the link between, the client and agency by maintaining regular contact with both to ensure that communication flows effectively
  • Review client material to make certain it is on strategy
  • Serve as brand advocates for our clients and understand their businesses well enough to make key strategic recommendations that help steer their brand
  • Schedule and attend client meetings
  • Coordinate public relations activities
  • Provide direction to internal teams for client projects
  • Manage client conflicts and resolutions
  • Present creative and strategic work to clients for approval or modification
  • Focus on client satisfaction and pay strict attention to the success of campaigns and client-generated feedback
  • Facilitate weekly, monthly, and quarterly client meetings
  • Communicate with board and executive members of the client’s team
  • Conduct and analyze client, customer, and industry research to direct agency strategic direction
  • Stay current with client industry trends and activities
  • Monitor client campaign effectiveness
  • Be aware of and seek out new project opportunities within current clients
  • Work with strategic marketing campaigns that meet the client’s marketing needs and budget
  • Write strategically for proposals, RFPs, scopes of work, and marketing plans

Department Management (10%)

The overall essential function of the department management segment of the Account Director position is to bring quality and consistency to W21 through staff management and contributions to the overall goals of the agency.

  • Manage staff, including hiring team members and, if necessary, terminating employment
  • Create job descriptions for employees
  • Define client assignments and staff workload
  • Ensure all departments work together and collaborate effectively
  • Maintain responsibility for employee development and overall department quality
  • Determine the need for, create, and manage processes and tools within the account management group (see Process Management above)
  • Ensure consistency, efficiency, and effectiveness in the account management group (see Process Management above)
  • Serve as the final decision maker within the department to ensure consistency and quality
  • Train and onboard new and existing employees
  • Develop and oversee brief and bid development
  • Contribute to client discovery and strategy processes
  • Bring innovation to and from the unit
  • Conduct team and department planning
  • Conduct team and department goal setting
  • Set tone and culture for account management team
  • Approve team members’ timesheets
  • Source, oversee, and manage outsource agreements and decisions
  • Participate in corporate strategic planning and department resource planning
  • Participate in budget management
  • Participate in department and project profit and loss review
  • Participate in client budget meetings as needed
  • Participate in department pricing structure and market pricing recommendations
  • Scope and cost projects
  • Keep aware of business development opportunities
  • Oversee, execute, and manage client campaigns and projects to ensure execution follows brand and strategy
  • Execute multi-channel strategies; including print, in-store, and events

Experience and Education

  • 5+ years of related experience
  • 2+ years of management experience
  • Preferred bachelor’s degree in a related field
