Overview
GitHub is looking for a Software Engineer III to join the Service Mesh team within our Developer Experience organization. You will focus on the systems and tools that enable our engineers to operate and scale the world’s largest code hosting platform. With limited guidance, you will build and enhance the virtual frameworks and tools that are used to manage and maintain the infrastructure. You will deploy, maintain, and enhance our Istio based service mesh with a focus on making the Developer Experience the best it can be for our engineering and infrastructure teams.
The Developer Experience team is highly distributed and you will thrive in an environment of remote work and asynchronous communication. You’re expected to have strong written communication skills and be able to develop working relationships with coworkers in locations around the globe. You will contribute to collaborations with software engineers and other infrastructure teams to troubleshoot issues and optimize infrastructure performance.

Responsibilities
- Builds and improves the frameworks and tools we use to build, test, and configure our Istio based service mesh in our infrastructure.
- Ensures a reliable service mesh platform across bare-metal, virtual machines, and cloud environments.
- Develops and supports our service mesh initiative across data center and cloud environments.
- Designs, implements, and supports new functionality for Mesh platform.
- Maintains software for configuration management, task automation, and infrastructure automation.
- Troubleshooting:
- With limited guidance, reads, and assesses errors to form accurate diagnoses and create or direct fixes.
- Remains on-call to handle incidents and outages, investigating and addressing issues to minimize the downtime and impact on services.
- Contributes to incident management processes, participates in incident report-out, and helps implement preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- 4+ years technical experience in infrastructure domains (e.g., container orchestration engineering, platform engineering, database engineering, software engineering, network engineering, systems administration, or related field)
- OR Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 2+ years technical experience in infrastructure domains (e.g., container orchestration engineering, platform engineering, database engineering, software engineering, network engineering, systems administration, or related field)
- OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ year(s) experience operating Kubernetes; ideally in a high scale, production environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exposure to service mesh platforms, such as Istio or Linkerd.
- Experience developing system software in Go.
- 1+ year(s) experience in one or more scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python, or a similar language).
- 1+ year(s) experience using general purpose programming languages (e.g., Go, Ruby, or a similar language).
- 2+ years experience with cloud environments and/or Cloud Native Compute Foundation (CNCF) concepts.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to meet GitHub, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft, GitHub’s parent company, Cloud Screen upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Compensation Range
The base salary range for this job is USD $97,900.00 – USD $259,900.00 /Yr.
These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual’s base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.GitHub values
